The College of Architecture and Environmental Design Foundation (CAED Foundation) was started back in the mid-80’s in an effort to continue the legacy of George Hasslein’s “Vision” for student focused, interdisciplinary studies, carried out through the Poly tradition of learn by doing. The CAED Foundation is a vehicle to enhance College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) programs, particularly those in the area of interdisciplinary studies through this non-profit 501 (c) (3) Corporation, making all donations tax deductible to the full extent of the law. The CAED Foundation has evolved into the only conduit, outside of CAED itself, for philanthropic contributions and efforts relating to CAED and its diverse programs. All CAED Foundation board members function on a volunteer, pay as you go basis, i.e. little to almost no overhead. The CAED Foundation continues to have an exceedingly high percentage ratio of funds collected going toward students and their activities. The CAED Foundation is, open to and made up, of all those individuals interested in giving something back and perpetuating George’s legacy; such as alumni, present and past faculty and friends of the CAED.
Last, but not least, CAED Foundation is the originator of the very successful Hasslein Endowed Chair campaign, with a great deal of fundraising help from Fred Sweeney (ARCH ’74) of the CAED Foundation board and Tanya Kiani, CAED Director of Advancement, her team and the rest of the CAED Foundation membership. Become a part of this legacy to George Hasslein, see the “Hasslein Endowed Chair” section of our website for more information on how you can participate and help us reach our goals.
The CAED Foundation currently provides funding, partial or complete, for the Wesley Ward CAED Foundation Teaching Award, the Christine P. Brown Memorial Scholarship, the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) scholarship, ARCH 463, which was George’s seminar/field trip series that CAED Foundation believes is so vital for students, and a scaled back version of the Hasslein Endowed Chair. The CAED Foundation has worked with CAED Dean Tom Jones and his staff and faculty in the previous months putting together a unique five year package involving CAED Foundation, as well as other funds, to get a scaled down version of the George Hasslein Endowed Chair in place beginning in the Spring Quarter of 2004. The CAED Foundation continues to work with Dean Tom Jones, Tanya Kiani and her team along with the Departments within the College in exploring other potential avenues of support.
Today the CAED Foundation enjoys a great working relationship with the CAED in helping to look to the future by retaining the important lessons of the past. The CAED Foundation is also the “official” representative of CAED on the Cal Poly Alumni Association Board of Directors and has a permanent position on the CAED Dean’s Advisory Council.
CAED Foundation has also put together two outstanding memory projects. CAED Foundation board member Rick Holden (ARCH ’72) oversaw the production of the “The Whole Enchilada,” which is a very professionally done video of George’s classic ARCH 101 seminar for freshmen, which George continued to give right up until his untimely passing. It is guaranteed to bring back many, hopefully now fond, memories of your days as a student at Cal Poly. The “The Whole Enchilada” videotape is available for a $40 donation to the Hasslein Endowed Chair.
The second is appropriately entitled the “Vision,” which is a well-written book, with many wonderful and memorable photographs, covering the history of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design from its early years through today. CAED Foundation board members Emanuele Barelli (ARCE ’70) and his wife Carolyn, Richard Byfield (ARCH ’72) and Ray Takata (ARCE ’57) were the driving force behind this beautifully put together “coffee table” book, which comes in either, a limited edition, leather bound hard cover version or soft cover. A copy is available with your contribution to the Hasslein Endowed Chair as follows: with a pledge gift of $10,000 or more, a limited edition leather bound hard cover copy will be yours with your initial $1,000 payment; with a pledge gift of $1,000 or more the soft cover copy will be yours with your initial $250 payment.
On the CAED Foundation website you will be able to find our upcoming meeting schedule, agendas and past meeting minutes, our current activities, CAED Foundation Bylaws, etc., so be sure to check the website for updates.
CAED Foundation is currently looking to expand the governing Board of Directors over the next six months and are looking for those who want to return something of what they received from their education at Cal Poly CAED by volunteering to attend meetings about twice a year on campus. Anyone interested in helping to perpetuate the legacy of George Hasslein’s “Vision” by becoming a part of the CAED Foundation Board of Directors, please contact any current board member or Fred Sweeney (ArcE ’64), President ’03-’04, via email: SWEENEY@PMSM-ARCHITECTS.com.
CAED Foundation would like to invite everyone, whether you may want to volunteer for a position on the board or not or just would like to see some former classmates and/or professors to our next board meeting, whose date, time and place can be found under the “
Alumni and Friends Participation” section.
