George Hasslein Endowed Chair
George Hasslein was a positive force at Cal Poly for more than 50 years – serving its students as a professor, department head and founding Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). George’s warm, nurturing nature endeared him to generations of CAED alumni who had the invaluable experience of learning form him both inside and outside of the classroom. His reaching philosophy was based upon one simple belied: that the function of a teacher is to help each student realize his or her rightful potential as a human being. We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating George’s distinguished career by supporting the creation of an endowed Chair in his honor.

The George Hasslein Endowed Chair For Interdisciplinary Studies in Environmental Design
An endowed Chair, named in George’s honor, has been established to help carry forward his particular style of student-focused education. The endowment will fund non-tenure teaching positions for prominent practitioners and scholars. The appointments will be for terms of one to two years. In order to attract candidates with active practice involvement, team appointments for up to five members will be considered.
In tribute to George’s teaching legacy, all occupants of the Chair will be encouraged to place special emphasis on the following:
- Student mentoring;
- Student classroom interaction with practitioners;
- Fieldtrips to urban environments; and
- Enhancing the College’s interdisciplinary instructional activities for faculty and students in all five CAED majors.

How will the Endowed Chair be Funded?
The CAED is entering into a partnership with CAED Foundation (College of Architecture and Environmental Design Foundation – an Alumni group founded in 1985 to provide financial and professional aid to the College), to raise $4,000,000 in private gift support with the assistance of alumni, friends and industry partners.
